Friday Faves: Slow Summer Mornings and Teenage Boys

This summer is flying by at a good clip. There’s been a ton of activities to keep us on our toes, but it’s of a different type and at a different pace. Tiny Dude and MiniAmateur have been participating in a strength and conditioning boot camp hosted by their high school’s athletics department. It’s divided up by sport, and their group has the early time slot at 7AM. So Monday through Thursday we’re up and out as if it was a school day. The bonus is I can drop them off at their bootcamp, go do my workout at the gym down the street, pick them up and be back home by 8:30. I’ve never been much of a morning person, but I am enjoying getting a running start on the day. Of course by the time evening rolls around I literally cannot remember what I did that morning — it seems like it was days in the past!

But, Friday… Beautiful Friday! We get to sleep in and take it slow. This week, MiniAmateur has been on a mission trip in Arkansas so it’s just been me and the boys.

Aaron wanted to make the “perfect stack” of pancakes this morning. (we watched a Master Chef Junior episode a few days ago during which there was a perfect pancake competition)

It’s so fun having kids that are taking an interest in new things — especially when it’s something that you share the joy of. I coached him through pancakes, strawberry coulis and sausage. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him fret over the doneness of the pancakes, work on getting a great flip and beam when they were cooked to beautiful, golden perfection. He plated the pancakes with care, topping them off with fresh sliced strawberries and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. They were amazing!

Here’s to slow and easy mornings. May we all have more of these peaceful moments this summer!
